Learning to Belly Dance with Props

Posted: July 10th, 2010 under Uncategorized.

Once you progress to Intermediate level in belly dancing, one of the main challenges is mastering all of the different props.

Please don’t try to get started using props too soon. I see lots of bellydancers using veils, Isis wings, swords and sticks to distract attention from their less-than-perfect bellydance technique. That could con the average person, but it will need considerably longer for you to become an accomplished bellydancer if you’re constantly being distracted by focusing on props.

It’s difficult enough for an experienced belly dancer to coordinate a couple of things at the same time - her body along with a wayward veil or sharp sword - so it’s obvious why a novice dancer will “drop the ball” on one or the other. Also, since the prop is in sight of her eyes, the prop is likely to win! So do remain calm, and don’t be in a hurry to start performing with props.

When you are ready, there’ll come a point that you can’t go on using your school’s equipment and will need to buy your own - and the costs can easily escalate. An excellent bellydance sword will cost at the least $100, for instance.

Before you begin buying props, make sure you determine what you’re searching for. As an illustration, you have to understand what size sagats or veil will do the job. Isis Wings are made in many sizes - professional ones are huge, but if, if you dance in troupe, you will need them smaller or you will never fit for the stage!
