Probiotics for a health digestive system

Posted: April 27th, 2011 under Uncategorized.

It is well documented that well balanced bowel bacteria also known as microflora in the digestive system plays an important role in maintaining healthy digestion and intestinal function such as regular bowel movements, immune system strength etc.
It helps us to absorb the essential nutrients from our food, aid in protect us against internal infections and they also help maintain a healthy immune system.

However, the balance of good and so called bad bowel bacteria or probiotics can easily be disrupted by a number of factors, such as antibiotic therapy, inadequate nutrition, travel to different areas, following surgery, inflammatory bowel diseases such as IBS and and ageing.

Each one of us has a population of over 400 different species of bacteria in the digestive system with a total in excess of 100 trillion bacterium.
This is many more bacteria than there are people on the planet. The make-up of the bowel flora is dependant on a number of factors including your diet, age etc. and the majority of these bacteria are essential for good health (probiotic) but the remainder are pathogenic and could become harmful.

These pathogenic bacteria can include E. coli and Salmonella which, in small quantities, are kept under control by the probiotic bacteria. However, if the balance is disrupted, the pathogenic or unfriendly bacteria can overgrow in the intestine causing digestive upsets such as bloating, smelly wind, pains in the gut, candida albicans yeast overgrowth etc.

Taking a high strength probiotic supplement can help to maintain the correct balance of bacteria in the bowel, thus ensuring a happy digestive system and good health.
